Extraordinary 1860 Presidential Campaign Poll Book “Pre-Lincoln” Election Republican Imprint

An exceptionally rare and historically significant poll book produced for the pivotal Presidential Election of 1860—issued during the height of the campaign, before Abraham Lincoln’s victory secured the office and altered the course of the nation. Printed in Albany by Weed, Parsons & Co., this striking green-covered example boldly proclaims the Republican rallying cry: “Free Speech, Free Soil and Free Men” and “Freedom is National! Slavery is Sectional!”—among the most iconic political slogans of the era.

Designed for use at the local level, the book contains structured columns for recording voters by school district, with printed party designations including “Republican,” “Douglas,” “Breckinridge,” and “Doubtful,” offering a fascinating and tangible glimpse into the fractured political landscape immediately preceding the Civil War. The interior retains its original format for canvassing and organizing votes, while accompanying printed content promotes Republican organization and turnout, underscoring its purpose as both a practical tool and a piece of political propaganda.

The survival of such ephemeral campaign material is exceedingly uncommon, particularly in this condition, with strong color, clear print, and excellent overall preservation. This piece represents a direct, unfiltered artifact from the most consequential election in American history—capturing the moment just before Lincoln’s rise and the nation’s descent into war.

A museum-worthy example of extraordinary rarity and historical importance, embodying the political tensions and organization of the 1860 election at the ground level.  The only such example we have encountered in 37 years of curatorial purchasing.

An Unvarnished Tale: The Public and Private Civil War Writings of Porter Farley, 140th N.Y.V.I

Author: Brian A. Bennet (editor)

Porter Farley was an officer in the 140th New York Infantry during the Civil War, serving in every campaign of the Army of the Potomac from late 1862 until he was discharged in 1864.  He started writing a history of his unit in the 1870s based on diaries and letters he had saved from the war, along with correspondence from notable Civil War leaders due to his interest in presenting an accurate account of the war.  Farley’s work garnered praise among his colleges, but was never fully reproduced in book form.  An Unvarnished Tale reproduces Farley’s entire “Reminisces of the 140th Regiment, N.Y. Volunteer Infantry”, as well as all of his Known post-war correspondence and writings.

“Over a Wide, Hot . . . Crimson Plain”: The Struggle for the Bliss Farm at Gettysburg, July 2nd and 3rd, 1863 (The Savas Beatie Essential Gettysburg, 1) Paperback – July 15, 2023

By Elwood Christ

Few visitors to the Gettysburg battlefield take note of the peculiar grassy rise in the fields southeast of the town between Seminary and Cemetery ridges. It was there that the Bliss home and barn once stood, between the lines in a no-man’s-land during the largest battle of the Civil War. The 60-acre farm witnessed back-and-forth bloody clashes that began on the morning of July 2, 1863, as a fitful episode between skirmishers and ended in a small but important combat all its own. The fight played an oversized role in the overall battle and directly impacted the massive rolling Confederate assault later that afternoon.

In a bit more than 24 hours, the back-and-forth Bliss farm combat would attract at least 10 Union and Confederate regiments, draw heavy artillery fire, disrupt the seemingly unstoppable Confederate assault moving northward against Cemetery Ridge, and kill and wound hundreds of men. This study is based on official records, letters, diaries, and other unpublished archival sources. A new foreword by award-winning author and Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide James Hessler opens this facsimile edition, which originally appeared to great acclaim in a small print run in 1994.
