An exceptionally attractive and scarce circa 1830 mourning cockade constructed of finely pleated black silk ribbon surrounding a beautifully detailed gilt button featuring a classical hunting horn device encircled by stars. The elegant symbolic motif is strongly associated with early American units.

The cockade retains its wonderful layered construction with outstanding visual depth and pleasing untouched age. The reverse displays its original period backing and attachment hook, supporting its careful preservation over nearly two centuries.

Mourning cockades of this quality and presentation are seldom encountered today, particularly examples retaining such strong form, crisp pleating, and an eye-catching central device. Pieces of this nature were worn during periods of public mourning, funerary observances, political ceremonies, and patriotic commemorations in the early 19th century.

Fine Confederate-themed stickpin constructed from a Virginia state seal coat button mounted to a long period pin shaft for wear or display. The face features the classic Virginia state motto, “Sic Semper Tyrannis,” surrounding the well-known allegorical figure standing over the fallen tyrant.

The reverse is marked “Canfield Bro. & Co.” with the original shank removed and professionally mounted to the pin stem. The button retains an attractive untouched patina with pleasing detail visible throughout the device and lettering.

This type of Gettysburg desk set / relic display originated with Edward Woodward, a British born gunsmith living in Baltimore when the war broke out, who reportedly refused Confederate offers to supervise a gun factory in favor of aiding wounded US soldiers as a member of a Union Relief Society and later moved to Gettysburg after the battle to aid the wounded as a member of the US Christian Commission. He remained in town and is known to have been selling similar desk sets as early as September 1866 and by 1870 was advertising his gunsmithing and his relic business from a shop on Carlisle Street near the train depot. After Woodward’s death in 1894 these popular desk sets continued to be made by John Good and Joel Danner, though in simpler form than Woodward’s. This set is a good example of an early battlefield souvenir that might be brought home even by a visiting veteran of the battle. U.S. Artillery officer’s button, featuring a bold, high-relief spread-winged eagle clutching arrows and olive branch, with the central shield displaying the traditional “A” branch designation for Artillery. The face retains excellent detail with bright, original gilt highlighting the eagle’s feathers, shield, and device.

The reverse shows the Massachusetts maker’s mark:

“D. EVANS & CO. • ATTLEBO’ MASS.” a respected manufacturer known for producing quality officer-grade buttons for militia and volunteer units. The original shank remains strong and intact. Artillery officer buttons are considerably scarcer than standard enlisted examples, having been privately purchased by commissioned officers for use on frock coats and dress uniforms.
