Original Civil War period Model 1855 triangular socket bayonet retaining an attractive even plum patina throughout. Accompanied by an old collector’s identification tag noting recovery or association with “Fort DeRussy, Rock Creek Park,” tying the piece to one of the principal earthwork forts defending Washington, D.C. during the Civil War. Fort DeRussy played an active role during the July 1864 Battle of Fort Stevens, where its heavy artillery helped repel Jubal Early’s Confederate advance on the capital. Exceptional early American bayonet, dating to the 1795 pattern era, representing the formative years of United States military arms following the American Revolution. This bayonet predates the War of 1812 and reflects early Federal efforts to equip and standardize infantry weapons during the nation’s infancy.

The blade bears a clear “B NC S” maker’s mark, struck near the base. The blade form, socket configuration, and locking cutout are all correct for early flintlock musket bayonets of this period.

This is one of the variations that were intended for the US model 1795 military musket. During this time our country it was a simple but effective as is hand forged bayonet. The bayonet measures 18 inches in overall size with the full-length 15 inch unfullered blade and a 2-3/4th inch socket cut with a “Z” three step friction fit mortise cut for a top lug, made without a bridge.

This fine example originates from the collections of George Willhauk, the Patrick J. Leonard Jr. collection, and the Don Troiani collection, one of the most respected authorities on early American military arms and uniforms.

Original Model 1855 U.S. socket bayonet, accompanied by its correct two-rivet leather scabbard, presented in desirable attic-found condition. The bayonet retains strong, honest age with surface oxidation consistent with long-term storage. 

The socket and locking mechanism remain intact. The blade exhibits uniform patination and wear consistent with period manufacture and storage. 

The accompanying scabbard is an early two-rivet example, retaining its original leather body. The leather shows dryness and separation along the seam and at the finial, a common and expected condition for attic-stored Civil War leather. Despite this, the scabbard remains a strong, displayable survivor with excellent form and character. 

A well-matched bayonet and scabbard set that displays exactly as collectors expect—honest, untouched, and full of period presence.

English manufacture, late 18th to early 19th century. Fine example of a regulation India Pattern (3rd Model) Brown Bess socket bayonet, bearing a clearly struck maker’s mark “S. CHAMBERS” on the ricasso. The bayonet features the classic three-sided tapered blade with pronounced shoulder and integral socket having a flared muzzle ring and standard mortise slot for the Brown Bess musket.

Overall length: approx. 21”; blade length: 17”; socket diameter: about 1”. The steel shows a smooth, bright finish with minor age toning and light handling marks, consistent with good storage. The Chambers stamp remains crisp and legible.

A very desirable maker-marked British Ordnance pattern bayonet, typical of the type carried by line infantry and colonial troops from the late 1790s through the War of 1812. Well above average condition and an attractive, well-marked example for display or reference.

A fine and completely original late-18th-century Brown Bess socket bayonet, prominently stamped “OSBORN & GUNBY” on the flat of the blade near the shank. This mark represents the partnership between Osborn & Gunby of Birmingham, one of the leading English bayonet and arms contractors to the British Ordnance during the last quarter of the 18th century.

The firm operated roughly between 1785 and 1808, producing socket bayonets, muskets, and other edged weapons for both government and private contract. Examples of this stamp are known on bayonets fitted to the India Pattern (“3rd Model”) Brown Bess musket, which became standard issue around 1793 and continued in use through the Napoleonic era and into the War of 1812.

Bayonets by Osborn & Gunby were produced for the British Board of Ordnance and widely exported to colonial and militia forces across the Atlantic world. Many saw service in North America during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars period, and similar examples have been recovered from early 19th-century American military sites.

This is an original triangular socket bayonet made for the US Model 1816 Flintlock Musket longarm. In time, the M1816 was converted to a percussion musket and the accompanying accoutrements could also be affixed to the newer conversion. The M1816 bayonet was the first American bayonet to include a uniformly ground flute and the first bayonet to employ the “T” mortise in the socket. The triangular blade is stamped with a “J’ and “S” and the side “36 Y”.

Battle of Gettysburg   Once part of a large collection of Gettysburg Battle relics, this bayonet adapter enabled rifles such as the Model 1817 and Model 1841, as well as Southern-made military rifles, to be mounted with bayonets even to militarize civilian guns.  Manufactured by Boyle Gamble and McFee, this one bears the serial number “60”.

Almost a hundred individual items mounted on a 48″ x 25.5″ plywood board, virtually all captioned with typed paper labels indicating the major battlefields on which they were found – Antietam, Bull Run, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, “Custer’s Battlefield, and others.  Items include buttons, minie balls, shrapnel, shell fragments, several .58 caliber socket bayonets, leather cartridge box, canteens, powder horns, belt plates and arrowheads.  Of particular note is a piece of wood with a bullet lodged in it indicated as being from Spotsylvania and an Enfield bayonet and scabbard. All items in dug, as found condition.  Would certainly be the center piece of any room!
