The World Will Never See the Like: The Gettysburg Reunion of 1913, by John L. Hopkins, traces the story of the Gettysburg reunion from its inception in 1908 to its fruition in 1918, covering the community perspective, the veterans’ search for reconnection, spectators’ thoughts on the spectacle, and more. In the words of reviewer Wylie W. Johnson, “The takeaway for senior leaders from this compelling book is the overriding necessity for reconciliation.”

The 1913 Gettysburg reunion is a story of 53,000 old comrades and former foes reunited, and of the tension, even half a century later, between competing narratives of reconciliation and remembrance. For seven days the old soldiers lived under canvas in stifling heat on a 280-acre encampment run by the U.S. Army. They swapped stories, debated still-simmering controversies about the battle, and fed tall tales to gullible reporters. On July 3, the aging survivors of Pickett’s Division and the Philadelphia Brigade shook hands across the wall on Cemetery Ridge in the reunion’s climactic photo op.

Some of the battle’s leading personalities attended, including Union III Corps commander Dan Sickles, who at 92 was still eager to explain to anyone who would listen the indispensable role he claimed to have played in the Union victory. Also present was Helen Dortch Longstreet, the widow of Confederate Lt. Gen. James Longstreet, who devoted her life and considerable energies to defending the reputation of her general. Both wrote articles from the reunion that were syndicated in newspapers across the country. There was even a cameo appearance by a young and as-yet unknown cavalry officer named George S. Patton Jr.

Hopkins fills his marvelous account with detail from the letters, diaries, and published accounts of Union and Confederate veterans, the extensive archival records of the reunion’s organizers, and the daily stories filed by the scores of reporters who covered it. The World Will Never See the Like offers the first full story of this extraordinary event’s genesis and planning, the obstacles overcome on the way to making it a reality, its place in the larger narrative of sectional reunion and reconciliation, and the individual stories of the veterans who attended. Every reader interested in Gettysburg will find this a welcome addition to their library.

Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863) was the largest battle fought on the American continent. Remarkably few who study it contemplate what came after the armies marched away. Who would care for the tens of thousands of wounded? What happened to the thousands of dead men, horses, and tons of detritus scattered in every direction? How did the civilians cope with their radically changed lives? Gregory Coco’s A Strange and Blighted Land. Gettysburg: The Aftermath of a Battle offers a comprehensive account of these and other issues.

The late Coco was a park ranger at Gettysburg deeply interested in the battle and what was left in its wake. The Vietnam veteran who wrote well and often about the battle waxes eloquently about the carnage of war, its terrors and pain, its irreplaceable cost in human life and treasure, and the toll it took on the families who lost sons and husbands there.

Arranged in a series of topical chapters, A Strange and Blighted Land begins with a tour of the battlefield, mostly through eyewitness accounts, of the death and destruction littering the sprawling landscape. Once the size and scope is exposed to readers, Coco moves on to discuss the dead of Gettysburg, North and South, how their remains were handled, and how and why the Gettysburg National Cemetery was established. The treatment of the wounded, Union and Confederate, was organized chaos. Every house and barn became of hospital or medical station, and the medical and surgical practices of the day were little short of compassionate torture. The author also discusses at length how prisoners were handled and the fate of the thousands of stragglers and deserters left behind once the armies left before concluding with the preservation efforts that culminated in the establishment of the Gettysburg National Military Park in 1895.

Coco’s prose is gripping, personal, and brutally honest. There is no mistaking where he comes down on the issue: There was nothing pretty or glorious or romantic about a battle—especially once the fighting ended.

Although the Battle of Gettysburg is named for the town near which it occurred, most of the heavy fighting actually occurred on the private property of men such as Edward McPherson, Joseph Sherfy and Nicholas Codori. Their farms suffered great damage as a result of the fighting, their structures were used as hospitals and their fields were converted into graveyards. Following the battle, however, little sympathy was given to their plight and little attempt was made by state or federal authorities to compensate them for their losses. Proceeds benefit the Adams County Historical Society.

There are two monuments to the 28th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment on the Gettysburg battlefield. The original monument on Slocum Avenue was dedicated by the State of Pennsylvania in 1885. The rough-hewn stone monument is inset with a bronze tablet. It is dominated by the five pointed star that is the symbol of the Union 12th Corps. A carved stone forage cap is in the center of the base. This resin monument is engraved with: Text from the front of the Slocum Avenue monument: 28th Penna. Infantry 1st Brig. 2nd Div. 12th Corps July 3rd 1863 From the back of the monument: Mustered in June 28th 1861 Re-enlisted December 22d 1863 Mustered out July 18th 1865 Arrived at 3 p.m. July 1st and went into position on the ridge north of Little Round Top at 6.30 a.m. July 2nd moved to Culp’s Hill where the Regiment was advanced to Rock Creek to support the skirmish line. At dark retired and moved with the Brigade returned at about 3 a.m. July 3rd and at 8 a.m. relieved the troops in the breast works. Was relieved in turn and again advanced and occupied the works from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Present at Gettysburg 13 officers and 290 men. Killed and mortally wounded 6 men. Wounded 1 officer and 19 men. Captured or missing 2 men. This replica monument stands approximately 7” tall 9 ½” across the base. It is complete with all the text and imagery that is found on the original monument including a brief description of the regiment’s actions. These were produced by Gary Casteel who is well known for his talent in producing copies of monuments on the field and his pieces are much sought after.

Framed handkerchief worn by General Daniel Butterfield. General Butterfield is best known today for his bravery and leadership during the Civil War. He was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg and awarded the medal-of-honor for gallantry during the Battle of Gaines’ Mill in 1862. A period, ink-written note affixed to the handkerchief attests to its provenance, stating it was used as late as 1863 or 1864 by the General (likely during the Battle of Gettysburg).

Excitingly, there is a period account that seems to his describe this very handkerchief being used by General Butterfield on the battlefield in 1862:  “A private of the command, at a campfire in New York, told of General Butterfield being on his horse and writing an order for his orderly to carry when shot and shell were flying in every direction. One of the shells struck dirt nearby and bespattered the general, covering his face and memorandum pad with mud. Butterfield simply took his handkerchief out of his pocket, wiped his face, took out the dirty Leaf from the pad, finished his order, and handed it to the orderly as calmly as if on dress parade.”- Army of the Potomac (1895).
